What Is It?
Kinesio tape is the brand name of elastic therapeutic tape, which is a cotton-woven elastic tape that is placed over muscles and joints the body. It is latex free, hypoallergenic and waterproof. The wave-like pattern of the tape along with its elastic properties allows the tape to "breathe", acting like a second skin. Because of this, the tape can be worn for days at a time without falling off.
What Does It Do?
The elasticity of the tape lifts the skin (on a microscopic level), adding space between the muscles and dermal layers. This allows for increased circulation, reduced inflammation, and the flow of lymphatic fluid in and out of the region being taped. The tape can be applied in one strip or multiple layers in alternating directions, depending on the region and condition being treated.
